Mrs R Case Study

Mrs. R, 79, became a client of Manchester Care and Repair after a conversation with a friend and neighbour. As a result of this meeting, a referral was made via the client’s medical practice, requesting a Caseworker visit to discuss her benefit situation.

Mrs. R lives alone and has several chronic, progressive conditions that have become more difficult to manage, particularly over the last two years.

What We Did

It was immediately identified that an Attendance Allowance application could be made, due to Mrs. R’s deteriorating health. Our caseworker ordered the forms and filled in the form for Mrs. R during a home visit. She was awarded Higher Rate Attendance Allowance for an indefinite period.

The process and the result gave Mrs. R confidence to explain other difficulties she was facing. The stairs were becoming increasingly problematic and she feared another fall. We made a referral to our in-house HandyHelp service, which fitted an extra stair rail promptly.

Mrs. R also explained she had recently obtained quotes to upgrade her very old heating system, but due to her restricted finances was unable to proceed any further. A further referral was made to our Home Repairs Support Team where Mrs. R was approved for a Manchester City Council heating grant and our Technical Officers arranged for her new boiler to be fitted.

A chance conversation has changed my future. I cannot be more thankful for the support I have received and make sure I tell people about Manchester Care and Repair whenever I can.” – Mrs. R.

Outcomes for Mrs R

  • An extra £92.40 per week in her pocket
  • A lump sum back pay award of £716.80.
  • She has an additional stair rail reducing the likelihood of a fall
  • A new modern, energy efficient and hydrogen-ready gas central heating system
  • An additional grabrail, increasing her physical confidence and reducing her falls risk.

Mrs. R now has a warmer, safer home and can navigate the extra costs with more reassurance after years juggling a very tight budget. Her health has improved and she has greater confidence that she can manage alone at home in the future.
